College life and mental health – Along with studies, it is also important to take care of the mind

Whenever we remember college life, the first things that come to mind are fun, freedom and moments spent with friends. Gossiping till late night, going on a sudden trip or sitting in the canteen for hours – all this makes college life special.

But to be honest, this time can also be the most stressful at times. Pressure of studies, exams, projects, worry about money, missing home and sometimes loneliness – all these together put a burden on the mind.

That is why during this period of college, it is very important to take care of not only studies but also your mental health.

First of all understand – what is stress?

Many people think that stress is always a bad thing. But it is not so.

Actually, stress is a natural reaction of our body and mind when we face any challenge or pressure.

For example, feeling a little nervous in the stomach right before an exam or feeling anxious as a project deadline approaches – this is stress.

  • A little stress is also good. It gives us the energy to work, helps us concentrate and complete the work on time.
  • But the problem arises when this stress persists continuously. Then it can turn into anxiety, depression and exhaustion.

Why is mental health important?

Mental health means – how your mind and your emotions are feeling.

If you often feel these symptoms, then understand that you need to take care of your mind:

  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Getting irritated over small things
  • Not being able to study
  • Feeling lonely and sad

All these are common in college students. But if they are ignored, then they can become a big problem in the future.

Why does stress increase in college?

College students are stressed due to many reasons. Some common reasons are as follows:

  • Study pressure – assignments, projects and exams
  • Part-time job and balance between studies – managing both income and classes
  • Worries about money – pocket money, tuition fees or loan
  • New environment – new friends, new city, new rules
  • Complications of friendship and relationships – sometimes fights, sometimes misunderstandings
  • Career uncertainty – what to do next, which path to take

Now let’s know – how to deal with college stress?

1. Time management – learn to plan work

Often we get nervous when we feel that there is more work and less time. In such a situation, the best solution is to make a simple timetable.

  • Make a daily schedule
  • Separate important and less important tasks
  • Divide big tasks into smaller parts

Example:
If your exam is after a week, then decide only one topic every day and take small breaks in between.

2. Talk openly with friends and family

Many times we think that “no one will understand my problem”. But the truth is that when you talk to someone close to you, the mind becomes lighter.

  • Talk openly with friends or family at least once a week.
  • If you feel very heavy, then meet a college counselor.

Example:
Suppose you are facing difficulty in studies. If you share it with a friend, then it is possible that he may have a better way of studying.

3. A little exercise is necessary every day

There is no need to go to the gym.

  • 20–30 minutes of walking
  • Doing yoga
  • Dancing
  • Cycling

This reduces stress and improves mood.

4. Do not compromise on sleep

If you study till late night and feel tired throughout the day, then it is a sign that you are sleeping less.

  • Every student needs 7–9 hours of sleep.

After a good night’s sleep, you will feel that studying is getting easier than before and your brain is working faster.

5. Stay away from mobile and social media

Nowadays social media also gives a lot of stress. Seeing the life of others, we start considering our life to be small.

  • Try to keep some time of the day mobile-free.
  • Spend minimum time on the screen before sleeping at night.

6. Eat healthy food

The food you eat determines your mood and energy.

  • Eat less junk food
  • Make sure to take fruits, green vegetables, pulses and milk
  • Drink enough water

Example:
If you keep eating only samosas, Maggi and cold drinks throughout the day, then the body will be tired and the mind will be sluggish. On the other hand, after eating a fruit and salad, you will feel light and energetic.

7. Meditation and mindfulness

Just sitting quietly for 10 minutes a day and breathing deeply gives a lot of relaxation to the mind.

How to do it:

  • Close your eyes
  • Slowly take deep breaths and exhale
  • Focus only on your breath

It will be difficult in the beginning, but it will gradually become a habit.

8. Learn to say “no”

You cannot participate in everything. If you are already very busy, then it is absolutely right to refuse something.

Example:
If a friend says – “Let’s go to a movie” but you have to complete a project, then politely say – “Not today, but tomorrow.”

9. It is important to take a break

Continuous study makes the brain tired. So take a 10-minute break after every hour.

  • Take a walk
  • Listen to soft music
  • Or close your eyes for a while

10. Do not hesitate to seek professional help

If you feel that your problem is increasing and you are unable to handle it on your own, then the best way is to meet a doctor or counselor.

  • Most colleges offer free counseling, take advantage of it.

Finally – believe in yourself

Stress is a part of college life. But no need to panic. Giving yourself some time, eating right and sharing your feelings will make you feel lighter.

Remember – every day is a new beginning. Just understand yourself, listen to your mind and live life a little relaxed. Most importantly – your mental health is as important as your degree.
