Sometimes we sit down to start studying, but our attention gets diverted within 5 minutes. Sometimes the mobile phone rings, sometimes boredom, and sometimes the thought that “I will study in a little while.” This is procrastination – that is, postponing important work.

If you also keep thinking that “I will definitely start from tomorrow”, then you do not need to worry. This happens to everyone. The only difference is that some people get out of this habit, and some remain entangled in it.

So let’s know some easy and effective ways by which you can focus on studies and gradually eliminate the habit of procrastination.

1. Decide the study work to be small and clear

When a task seems very big, the mind starts postponing it. Like if you think “I will read the entire history today”, then the mind will say – “Not now, we will see later”.

What to do?

  • Divide the work into pieces.
  • For example, say: “Today I will only read the first page of chapter 3 and write 5 points from it.”

This will make the mind feel easy and you will get started.

2. Make a study timetable and follow it

One should not study without a planned time or else this would be like embarking on a voyage without a map. However, once the time is fixed, the mind automatically gets attuned and fresh.

Example:

  • 6 to 7 in the morning – Maths
  • 5 to 6 in the evening – Science

Tips:

  • Make it a habit to study at the same time every day.
  • You can try the “Pomodoro Technique” – read for 25 minutes, then a 5-minute break. After four times, take a 15-30 minute break.

3. How to study without distraction?

Mobile, TV, social media – these are the biggest reasons for distraction.

Solution:

  • Keep your mobile on silent or airplane mode while studying.
  • Choose a place where there is silence – like the study table, library, or room.
  • If necessary, use apps like “Forest” which increase focus.

4. How to make studies interesting?

If studying seems boring, no one will be able to focus. Try to do active learning.

What to do?

  • Try to give an explanation of whatever you read to someone.
  • Ask yourself questions about it: “Why did this happen?” “What does it mean?”
  • Make flash cards, jot down some notes, take some mock tests.

5. Keep all the study material properly

Sometimes we run away from studying because it takes us half an hour to find books and notes.

Easy way:

  • Keep books and copies ready on the table in advance.
  • Keep important papers and topic wise notes in a folder.
  • Write deadlines and exam dates on a whiteboard or planner.

6. How to keep yourself motivated?

If you don’t have a thought in your mind that “why do I have to study”, then you will get distracted again and again.

What to think?

  • “Why am I studying?” – a better career, parents’ dream, government job, your dream college…
  • Give yourself a small reward after completing your studies – like your favorite chocolate or a favorite video on YouTube.

7. Take care of both body and mind

For good studies, it is very important to have a healthy body and mind.

Keep in mind:

  • Make sure to get 7-8 hours of sleep every day.
  • Do a little exercise or yoga – it keeps the mind happy and refreshed.
  • Eat nutritious food – like fruits, vegetables, pulses and dry fruits.

8. Don’t study alone – take help from friends

Sometimes you get bored while studying alone. At that time, the company of friends is helpful.

How to get help?

  • Form a small study group. Study together for 30 minutes every day.
  • If you are not able to understand a topic, ask friends, teacher or senior.
  • Tell your parents what you want to study – their support will also motivate you.

9. Evaluate yourself every week

No method is 100% correct. You have to see for yourself what is working for you.

What to do?

  • Think every Sunday: What did you do well this week and what did not?
  • If you have made a mistake, learn and move forward instead of blaming yourself.

Conclusion: Develop the right habits gradually

Focus and discipline do not come overnight. You have to gradually build habits. Start with just this – set a goal, set a time and remove distractions.

After a few days, you will yourself feel that now you are more focused and organized than before.

Remember:

You have the ability. You just need to understand yourself a little and handle yourself a little. Whenever you feel that you are not able to study, do not panic – rather try one or two things mentioned in this article.

Whether your goal is board exams, a competitive exam or just better marks – studying with focus is the biggest weapon.
